A smell, and nothing to point at
This is the version of the job where finding it is the job. Everything else — the lifting, the disposal — is the short part at the end.
It is also the one situation where there is genuinely nothing for a public department to do. There is nothing to report, nothing lying anywhere anyone can look at, and no service anywhere in Mentor or Lake County that comes out to search a house.
What narrows it down
Odour moves with air, which is why the room it is strongest in is often not the room the animal is in. A few things shift the odds quickly.
- High or low. Strongest near the ceiling points upward — attic, soffit, the void above. Strongest at floor level points at a crawl space, a joist bay, or under a unit.
- Worse with the heating on. Air being driven through a void carries it, and that usually means ducting or an attic.
- Worse near one wall. Narrows it to a bay or a chase rather than a whole storey.
- Flies. A cluster at one window or light fitting is the most useful single clue there is, and it is nearly always directly below or beside the source.
- What was heard beforehand. Scratching overhead that stopped a few days ago dates it and places it at once.
Before anyone comes out
None of this needs doing, but any of it makes the visit shorter: note which room and which height, whether it is worse in the morning or with the heating running, and whether flies have appeared anywhere specific. Do not start opening things up on a guess.
The limit
If the trail ends at a sealed finished wall with no access, that is where it ends. Nothing is cut open as routine. What that means in practice is set out on the indoor page, including the realistic timeline if the animal simply has to be left to dry out.
Questions about a smell with no source
I cannot find it. Is that a problem?
That is how nearly every one of these begins. The typical caller has something that barely registered a few days ago and now meets them at the door, plus a vague sense of which end of the house is worst. Nothing more is needed to get started.
What if the search does not find anything?
It happens, and it is worth agreeing before anyone travels what that means for the bill. A search with no guarantee attached is an honest description of this job. Anyone promising to find it is promising something they cannot know yet.
How long will the smell last if nothing is done?
For a small animal in a dry space it usually builds, peaks and then fades over roughly two to four weeks as the carcass dries out. Warmth, damp and size all stretch that. This is a field expectation rather than a laboratory figure, and it is not a reason to wait if the smell is making a room unusable.
Could it be something other than an animal?
Sometimes. A failed trap in a drain, a dead bird in a bathroom extract duct, spoiled food behind an appliance and a sewer gas fault have all been mistaken for it. Part of narrowing it down is ruling those out, which is quicker with a person in the room than over the phone.
